Tumescent liposuction

Tumescent liposuction is an alternative and new method of liposuction , allowing the surgery to be of reduced risk. When a tumescent liposuction technique is applied, only a very small amount of blood is lost, compared to the regular liposuction technique. This results in smaller risk for the need of a blood transfusion during surgery. It is a relatively new technique and not all specialists may perform it. Tumescent liposuction technique is proved to cause less pain, bruising and swelling after surgery, hence shortening the postoperative recovery period.

The surgery

There are three options of anesthesia methods. The doctor usually apply general anesthesia to most of the patients. Another option is to provide a combination of anesthetics in the tumescent liquid and sedatives. Sometimes the surgeon may decide that the anesthetics in the liquid are enough for proper anesthesia during the surgery.

During this type of plastic surgery , a warm liquid is injected into the areas where excess fat is present. This tumescent fluid contains of a solution of anesthetics, such as epinephrine, lidocaine, and intravenous liquid. The role of a tumescent liquid is to make the areas of excess fat swollen, solid and bloodless. Afterwards liposuction is performed on tumesced regions and fat is sucked out of the body.

After surgery

Recovery period usually lasts three weeks. Most patients feel some bruising and swelling in the treated areas. These symptoms should decrease with time and then the results should be visible the most. Although you should bear in mind that surgery results are noticeable straight after the procedure.

Postoperative pain is well controlled by anesthetics used in tumescent surgery and pain killers. Patients may resume light exercise and physical activity within the first two days after the procedure. They may get back to their normal physical routine within the first few weeks. Patients may return to work within two days after surgery.

If a patient remains active and leads a reasonable diet, surgery results are there to stay for a very long period.

Tumescent liposuction risks

Although tumescent liposuction is a safe procedure, just like any surgery it may have certain risk and possible complications that you should be aware of. These risks are the same as for patients undergoing regular liposuction . However, the risk or chance for the need of a blood transfusion is smaller for patients undertaking tumescent liposuction.

If greater regions in size are treated or bigger amounts of fatty fluid are sucked out, then the risk for complications increases. Possible complications include infection, bleeding, delayed healing period, larger and noticeable scars, adjacent organ injury, and possible adverse reactions to the drugs used. Most of these risks may be diminished if a more specialized and qualified surgeon performs this surgical procedure, however, even then complications may occur.

A certain complication, associated with tumescent liposuction technique only, occurs due to lidocaine toxicity. Lidocaine, found in the tumescent fluid, may cause pulmonary edema (accumulation of liquid in the lungs). This condition usually happens when too much tumescent liquid is injected or concentration of lidocaine is too high.

Tumescent liposuction cost

Tumescent liposuction costs from $1500 to $1800 per region, including both sides. The price of each additional region ranges from $500 to $900 per site. This is only the surgeon’s fee, therefore, additional price includes in patient stay, price for anesthesia and operating room. Hence, total cost of tumescent liposuction ranges from $2000 to $3000, depending upon the region, state and private clinic.
